Breakthroughs in behavioural economics are revolutionizing fields as diverse as medicine, sports management and government policy. Nowhere is it more applicable today than in the investing world – where cool-headed, rationality prevails over investors’ tendency to let emotional and cognitive biases impair their decision-making processes. Scott will examine the behavioural and structural rationales behind the consistent outperformance of smart beta factor investing, relative to the traditional market-capitalization-weighted approach.

FIXED INCOME INVESTING: BETTER SPREADS USING ETFS – PANEL DISCUSSION

Alan Green, Director, iShares Canada Capital Markets, BlackRock

Steven Hawkins, President and Co-CEO, Horizons ETFs Management (Canada) Inc.

Alfred Lee, Portfolio Manager & Investment Strategist, Vice President, BMO ETFs, BMO Global Asset Management

Although the size of fixed income ETFs is small compared with that of equity ETFs, they are growing at a much faster rate. Exchange-traded funds are transforming debt markets as big investors are using them in ways considered unheard of just a few years ago – they’ve grown as liquid alternatives to cash and temporary holding pens for capital, and as trading tools. Fixed income ETFs offer a speedier and cheaper alternative to traditional bond investing. But such a dramatic transformation of the debt market brings challenges as well as opportunities, and regulators are taking notice.

2:10 – 2:50

ALTERNATIVE INVESTING USING ETFS: THE NEXT BIG ETF WAVE? – PANEL DISCUSSION

ETFs have revolutionized the asset management industry through disruptive innovation. If the first wave of this disruption was in passive, index based investing, with the second wave in smart beta or factor based investing – arguably the next wave is in the area of alternative investing. This panel will discuss alternative investment strategies now implemented by specialized ETFs that until now have only been accessible through traditional private investment funds, especially in the areas of hedge fund replication, managed futures, covered calls, put/write, and infrastructure.

Learn about what’s next for Bitcoin in the capital markets, and how Bitcoin could be incorporated into existing portfolios. Furthermore, this new asset class goes far beyond Bitcoin, with examples like Ethereum and Ripple now holding US$7 billion and US$2 billion in value, and the aggregate market cap of cryptoassets now totaling nearly US$40 billion in value.
