Pat Bolland, Senior Counsel, Veritas Communications
Pat is Senior Counsel at Veritas Communications advising on media training, crisis management and public and investor relations. Pat recently left his hosting duties at BNN; the leading source of business television programming in Canada. Pat is a Queen’s University graduate with a BPHE/BA(Mathematics). Pat worked his way up in the investment industry from floor clerk on the Toronto Stock Exchange to Vice President of Equity Trading with a firm in the top tier of the industry in Canada. Pat then moved into broadcasting and became a leading business figure in Canada on TV and radio and included a stint at CNBC in the USA before returning to his roots in Canada.
Michael Cooke, Head of Distribution, PowerShares Canada
In this role, Michael integrates PowerShares exchange traded products into the Canadian retail and institutional markets. He works with both internal and external clients to complement Invesco’s existing business and bring the best of Invesco PowerShares global expertise to Canadian investment professionals and their clients.
Michael joined Invesco in 2008 after a career in derivative product marketing where he was responsible for the origination, structuring and distribution support of a broad range of products linked to a range of asset classes including fixed income, equity, commodities, managed funds and currencies. Prior to that, Michael held progressively senior sales, marketing and management positions at several global asset management firms. During his career, Michael has consulted with numerous institutional and retail clients across multiple product and business lines.
He is a graduate of Queen’s University in Political Studies and makes his home in Toronto with his wife and two children.
Parm Dhaliwal, Sales Executive, Vanguard Investments Canada Inc.
Parm Dhaliwal is a sales executive for Vanguard Investments Canada Inc., serving the Western Canada region. Before joining Vanguard, Mr. Dhaliwal held increasingly senior positions in the investment industry. Most recently he was a regional vice president at Claymore Investments for Western Canada. Before that, Mr. Dhaliwal worked on the sales team at Fidelity Investments, was Supervisor of Trading Operations at CIBC World Markets. He has over 13 years of experience in the financial services industry.
Mr. Dhaliwal has a Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, and is a CFA® charterholder.
Steve Higgins, Manager, Canadian Gold Reserves program, Royal Canadian Mint
Steve Higgins is the Manager of the Canadian Gold Reserves program at the Royal Canadian Mint. He is responsible for the design, development and management of the exchange traded receipts (ETRs). Before joining the Mint in 2009 Steve was the Manager, Corporate Performance at Sustainable Development Technology Canada which makes early stage investments into the Cleantech sector. Steve completed his MBA at HEC School of Management in Paris and his Bachelor of Science and Business at the University of Waterloo.
Christopher Johnson, Director, Knight ETF Trading
Chris Johnson is a Director of Listed Derivatives Sales at Knight Capital. Based in the United States, he is responsible for broadening the firm’s ETF trading relationships worldwide and managing the team’s thought leadership.
Mr. Johnson has been in the financial service industry for more than fourteen years and has been involved in sales, development, and product management of ETFs since 2002. Prior to joining Knight Capital, Mr. Johnson held several internationally focused management roles with Vanguard over the course of thirteen years. Most recently, he was a senior manager in the firm’s ETF Product Management Department, leading a team dedicated to the development of ETFs domiciled and listed in Canada, the U.K., and Hong Kong. Mr. Johnson also spent several years in Vanguard’s Singapore office as head of institutional business for Asia ex-Japan and was responsible for bringing in over $17 billion in new assets under management for the firm.
Mr. Johnson holds a B.A. (honors) degree in Asian Studies from Colgate University and a Graduate Business Certificate in Finance from Saint Joseph’s University. He is a frequent speaker in indexing and ETF related conferences worldwide.
Paul D. Kaplan, Ph.D., Director of Research, Morningstar Canada
Paul D. Kaplan, Ph.D., CFA is director of research for Morningstar Canada. Prior to assuming this role, he was vice president of quantitative research for Morningstar, responsible for the quantitative methodologies behind Morningstar’s fund analysis, indexes, advisor tools, and other services. He conducts research on investment style analysis, performance and risk measurement, asset allocation, retirement income planning, portfolio construction, index methodologies, and alternative investments. He led the development of the quantitative methodologies behind the Morningstar RatingTM for funds, the Morningstar Style BoxTM, and the Morningstar family of indexes.
Many of Kaplan’s research papers have been published in professional books and publications such as the Financial Analysts Journal, the Journal of Portfolio Management, the Journal of Wealth Management, the Journal of Investing, the Journal of Performance Measurement, the Journal of Indexes, the Handbook of Equity Style Management, and Intelligent Commodity Investing. He received the 2008 Graham and Dodd Award and was a Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence winner in 2000.
Kaplan has made numerous presentations on fund analysis, asset allocation, portfolio management, equity indexes, and related topics at industry conferences, professional organizations, and education programs. He has been quoted in several major business publications, including the Wall Street Journal.
Previously, he served as chief investment officer of Morningstar Associates, LLC, a registered investment advisor and wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc., where he developed and managed the investment methodology for Morningstar’s retirement planning and advice services.
Before joining Morningstar in 1999, he was vice president of Ibbotson Associates and served as the firm’s chief economist and director of research. (Morningstar acquired Ibbotson in March 2006.) Prior to that, he served on the economics faculty of Northwestern University where he taught international finance and statistics.
Kaplan holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, economics, and computer science from New York University and a master’s degree and doctorate in economics from Northwestern University. He is a member of the Chicago Quantitative Alliance and the review board of the Research Foundation of the CFA Institute. Kaplan holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
Gary Knight, Vice President, Trading, TSX Markets
Gary Knight is Vice President of Trading at TSX Markets. Mr. Knight is responsible for trading, product development, product management, Canadian sales, international sales and business strategy.
Mr. Knight has over 20 years of experience in financial markets, portfolio management and trading.
Before joining TMX Group, Mr. Knight held the position of Institutional Equity Trader, Portfolio and Algorithmic, at Cormark Securities Inc.
Prior to Cormark Securities, Mr. Knight was a Senior Portfolio Manager with the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System. He managed and traded Canadian and U.S. Enhanced Index Portfolios. The notional value of assets under his management exceeded $3.0 billion.
Mr. Knight has an MBA from York University, Schulich School of Business and is a CFA charter holder.
Rohit Mehta, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, First Asset Capital Corporation
Rohit leads the sales and marketing team at First Asset. He has gained much of his industry knowledge through progressive roles in the financial industry over the last 11 years. This has provided him insight into a broad cross section of products including ETFs, TSX listed Structured Products and Mutual Funds. Rohit and his team partner with Financial Advisors across Canada to educate and deliver investment solutions to their clients. Rohit was integral in the development and launch of First Asset Exchange Traded Funds. He holds a BA (Honours) in Economics from the University of Western Ontario.
Tyler Mordy, Director of Research, HAHN Investment Stewards & Company Inc.
Tyler Mordy is the Director of Research and a senior portfolio manager for HAHN Investment Stewards, an early and leading innovator in delivering “global macro” managed ETF portfolios. He is widely quoted and interviewed by the financial media (including CNBC, BNN, Forbes, the Globe and Mail, and the Wall Street Journal) for his global investment strategy views as well as ETF trends.
A member of HAHN’s Investment Committee, he is engaged in top-down strategy, investment policy and securities selection. Tyler is also an advisory board member of IndexUniverse’s ETF Analytics platform, a leading independent authority on ETF analysis.
Amelia Nedovich, Head, Business Development, ETFs & Structured Products, Toronto Stock Exchange
Ms. Nedovich joined Toronto Stock Exchange 15 years ago and has served in various capacities throughout her tenure. Currently, she is responsible for the implementation of the ETF & Structured Product business development strategy for Toronto Stock Exchange, including sponsored education and marketing initiatives promoting the growth of the industry. She also manages relationships with key ETF and structured product industry participants.
Prior to joining TSX, Ms. Nedovich worked as an economist with the Ontario Public Service.
Ms. Nedovich holds an MA in Political Economy from the University of Toronto and an MBA from the Rotman School of Management.
Brennan O'Brien, Assistant Vice President, Barclays
Brennan O'Brien is an Assistant Vice President and member of the Product Origination team within Investor Solutions at Barclays. Based in New York, Mr. O'Brien joined Barclays Capital in 2008. He works on global product development, specifically focused on retail structured investments and exchange traded notes (ETNs). In this role, Mr. O'Brien works with colleagues in Trading and Structuring to create new structured investments for clients. He is also involved in the development of new issuance platforms and vehicles.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Accounting from the University of Richmond.
Tim Pickering, President, Lead Portfolio Manager, CIO, Auspice Capital Advisors
Tim Pickering, Founder and President of Auspice Capital Advisors (Auspice), is the lead portfolio manager and CIO with over 15 years of commodity and financial trading experience. Prior to forming Auspice, Tim was Vice President of Options Trading at Shell Trading Gas and Power in the Houston and Calgary offices. Tim began his career at TD Securities in Toronto in their elite trading development program. He gained experience in a wide expanse of capital market products including foreign exchange, bonds, money markets and derivatives. Ultimately, Tim held the Senior Trader position for the energy derivatives portfolio. Tim has extensive experience trading OTC and exchange traded options, futures, swaps and quantitative trend following systems.
With partner Ken Corner, Tim has built Auspice Capital Advisors as a next generation CTA, offering strategies in active managed futures, passive ETFs, enhanced indices and custom commodity strategies. Most recently, Auspice launched the Auspice Broad Commodity Index and the Auspice Managed Futures Index (NYSE published) that support two new Claymore ETFs on the TSX. Additionally, Auspice launched the Auspice Energy Program, a multi-strategy, multi-time period quantitative approach to investing in the global energy futures markets.
Jaime Purvis, Executive Vice President, Horizons ETFs
As Executive Vice-President, National Accounts at Horizons Exchange Traded Funds, Jaime is responsible for developing and maintaining key relationships in the retail investor channel through the Canadian Investment Dealers, both regarding their investment advisor forces and the self-directed distribution channels. Additionally, Jaime also runs special projects, including relationships with managed asset and discretionary management programs operated by the Investment Dealers. As an educational specialist, Jaime is integral in implementing and delivering educational campaigns for Horizons ETFs, such as the acclaimed Horizons ETF University and the monthly technical webinars. Finally, Jaime is the Team Lead for Horizons BetaPro ETFs within Horizons ETFs, where he is responsible for team education and strategy implementation.
A Queen’s University graduate with an Honours degree in Political Science, Jaime has been with Horizons ETFs and predecessor firms since 1995.
Jaime represents Horizons ETFs on the Alternative Investment Management Association, the global organization for Alternative Investments operations and management, and sits on the Canadian Retail Sales Practices Committee.
Mark Raes, Vice President & Portfolio Manager, BMO Asset Management
Mr. Raes is the manager of fixed income portfolios, co-manages derivatives trading and equity portfolios, and serves as an operational specialist to the BMO ETF team. Mr. Raes has spent most of his 15-year career in the financial services industry working with Exchange Traded Funds. His past work has involved overseeing performance measurement at Mackenzie Financial Corp. and fund operations for BGI Canada at Investor's Bank & Trust. He holds a BBA in Finance from Wilfrid Laurier University, an MBA from York University, and is a CFA charter holder.
Aye M Soe, Director, Index Research and Design, S&P Indices
Aye M Soe is director, index research and design, at S&P Indices. Aye is responsible for quantitative index research and design covering global strategy and thematic indices. Aye has led the research and design effort on the S&P Merger Arbitrage Indices, S&P Dividend Opportunities Indices, S&P Low Volatility and High Beta family of indices as well as a number of thematic indices. Aye Soe has also published and co-authored on a number of S&P publications as well as research papers related to indexation concepts.
Prior to joining S&P Indices in June 2007, Aye was an analyst within the Consulting Services Group at Morgan Stanley and an associate product manager at FactSet Research Systems.
Aye has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Tufts University and a master’s degree in Economics from Fordham University.
John Stephenson, Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager, First Asset Investment Management Inc.
John Stephenson is a senior vice president and portfolio manager with First Asset Investment Management Inc., where he is responsible for a wide range of equity mandates with a particular focus on energy and resource investing. He has been recognized by Brendan Wood International (BWI) as one of Canada's 50 best portfolio managers for the past three years.
He is the author of The Little Book of Commodity Investing (John Wiley & Sons-2010), which has been translated into five languages and Shell Shocked: How Canadians Can Invest After the Collapse (John Wiley & Sons-2009), and writes a free bi-weekly investment newsletter, Strategic Investor, which reaches a global audience of more than 225,000 (www.StephensonFiles.com).

Atul Tiwari, Managing Director, Vanguard Investments Canada Inc.
Atul Tiwari is managing director of Vanguard Investments Canada Inc. He is responsible for leading the Canadian business, which will offer investment products to Canadian investors through investment advisors and other registered dealers and portfolio managers.
Before joining Vanguard in May 2011, Mr. Tiwari held progressively senior positions at BMO (Bank of Montreal) Financial. Most recently he was senior vice president of BMO Asset Management and president of BMO Exchange Traded Funds. Prior to that, he was president and CEO of BMO’s U.S. subsidiary mutual fund business, Harris Insight Funds, in Chicago. Other prior experience includes being called to the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Supreme Court of England and Wales, as well as practising (practicing U.S.) law in London, England, for two years.
Mr. Tiwari serves as a director on the board of trustees and as chairman of the pension committee for the Royal Ontario Museum. He is a campaign cabinet member for the Neshama Universal Playground being built in Toronto, Canada, and a director of the D.D. Foundation, which provides medical care and education to the disadvantaged in India. He served on the Building Osgoode campaign cabinet and is a past president and director of the Osgoode Hall Law School Alumni Association.
Elmer Velasco, Business Development Assoc. Vanguard Investments Canada Inc.
El Velasco is a business development associate for Vanguard Investments Canada Inc., serving the Western Canada, Central Ontario, Eastern Ontario, and Atlantic Canada regions. Before joining Vanguard, Mr. Velasco provided wealth management services to private clients at RBC Royal Bank. He spent over eight years as an investment advisor and associate investment advisor at RBC Dominion Securities, where he was options- and insurance-licensed. A practicing Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute, he has over 14 years of financial services experience and is a candidate for the Chartered Investment Manager and Certified Financial Planner designations. Mark Webster, Vice President, BMO Asset Management
Mark is the BMO ETF team's globetrotter. A veteran of the financial services industry, Mark began his career as a professional indemnity broker before becoming a vice president at Minet International Professional Indemnity Ltd. (now part of AON), conducting risk analysis for the Big 8 global accounting firms, as well as some of the top U.S. law firms. He is responsible for overseeing the proliferation of ETFs throughout Canada's vast western region and providing support to portfolio managers from Duncan B.C. to Thunder Bay, Ontario. He has worked as a retail investment advisor with RBC DS; in the mutual fund industry with First Trust Portfolios; and has held several other positions in the pension industry. He brings with him a Masters degree in Russian History from McGill University. Mark also holds the CSC, CPH and Options designations.

Mark Yamada is President and CEO of PŮR Investing Inc. (PŮR). PŮR combines software development with portfolio management delivering innovative solutions to defined contribution pension plans and disruptive strategies to investment advisors and their clients. PŮR provides independent exchange-traded fund (ETF) analysis, risk-based portfolio construction and web-based tools including a multi-factor ETF screener and volatility drag calculator for use with leveraged ETFs.
